Design & Public Policy

Rhode Island Arts & Health Network

In September 2019, The Rhode Island Department of Health launched the state’s first Arts and Health Plan, “a public health roadmap for advancing the integration of arts and health for the state”. Now that the plan has been established and the groundwork has been laid, RIDOH is seeking to build an Arts & Health Center that will “fully integrate arts and arts-based therapies into all healthcare and community settings through innovative and sustainable policy, practice, and research strategies” (Rhode Island Arts and Health Initiative).

Though the effort has identified opportunity areas, it is in need of guiding design principles and collective vision among a broad array of stakeholders to shape the efforts. The Design and Public Policy Studio offers an opportunity to co-design a vision for the future, that future’s governing principles and the portfolio of interventions of different scales, costs and timelines that will bring that future into practice. Participants will be exposed to strategic design methodologies and mindsets, equipping them to apply these capabilities back at their own work and continue the efforts of integrating arts and health in Rhode Island.
